8 Facts About Magnus

I was tagged on dA to post eight facts about Magnus, so I thought it would be fun to post them here too so you can get to know his character a little more!

1) He is a high ranking general in the Unity army.  After his parents were assassinated by 'Terrorist Rogues' and he was blinded during the same event, Magnus was entered into the government orphanage system where he grew up before being invited to join the Unity Militia Academy.  Since Unity took over Genesis in the coup, the police was swallowed up by the military so both are interchangeable.  Magnus was acting as the commissioner (title of "General" on Genesis) in the capital city before being transferred to Edom to help clean up the streets that have been running rampant with Graffiti Rogues that started venturing out from the Sub and Midlevels and out onto the glamorous Upperlevels.

2) Magnus can't see a thing...without his vision implant.  Magnus was blinded on the night his parents were killed.  The weapons used to blind him are shockers--the things he's holding in the picture--that were slashed across his eyes.  Following the event, he received a government-provided vision implant that when activated, projects a visor that allows him to see.  The tech wasn't that great (as it was meant to be mass-produced and not specialized for say, a richer person), so the figures seen through the visor are very ghost-like from a distance and look inverted when seen close up (think what a roll of film looks like before it's processed).

3) He's got a bad handle on his emotions.  Magnus could easily get pegged as the tough guy who doesn’t show emotion, but that’s not him.  He’s easy to fly into a rage and bottles up his feelings while on the job, only for them to explode during a sparring match or over something trivial if he’s had a particularly irritating day.

4) What are friends?  Magnus never had any real attachments during his time in Unity; his last relationships/attachments were at the orphanage with his friends (he called them his siblings) that he grew up with.  He’s had a few liaisons with some of the women in the Unity militia, but they never lasted very long since they were typically one night stands.  He’s confused and hesitant when Arcadia shows him real affection after he joins the Rogues, since it's been so long since someone actually cared about him.

5) He likes making funnies.  Magnus is pretty quippy.  He's the type who has a more sophisticated sense of humor–Arcadia’s sense of humor is blunt (she likes slapstick) so she thinks he’s making fun of her when he’s trying to be funny. ;P  They'd most likely enjoy a Marx Brothers movie together since they have both slapstick and quick, verbal humor!

6) He goes AWOL.  Once Magnus finds out that the government he works for orchestrated the deaths of his parents and his blinding, he seeks out asylum with the 'Freedom Fighter Rogues' in exchange for vital information on Unity's military operations, passcodes, and whatnot.  He goes to a retired Unity surgeon who runs a pawn shop in the sublevels of Edom and has the man deactivate his chip.  Everyone on Genesis is chipped, as it is a way for the government to track them, and also contains basic info like blood type, allergies, etc. in case of an emergency.  He doesn't realize that the chip is connected to his vision implant as a failsafe against defecting by the army, and once it is deactivated, he is rendered totally blind.

7) He meets Arcadia by arresting her dad.  YEP.  Back when Magnus was a major jerk and lackey for Unity, he was the officer in charge of apprehending and arresting Varian Cross for treasonous activities against the Unity government.  Arcadia demanded to know what was going on and kept getting in his face...so he kind of lost his temper and slapped her out of the way.  Little did he know she'd be his liaison once he goes AWOL (and yeah, she considers letting the Unity soldiers pick him up for Desertion instead of following through with the Rogues' side of the bargain to grant him safety multiple times during their slapdash excursion to the nearest Rogue safehouse).

8) "You killed my father (and mother).  Prepare to die!"  Once he knows who is personally responsible for putting him through hell for most of his life, the spark of revenge Magnus harbored since that fateful night is fueled with a heavy dose of gasoline.  He keeps his vendetta to himself, offering to go with the Rogues on missions that take him closer and closer to Ducard in hopes that he can look the man in the eye while he slowly (and painfully) kills him.  This also make him a little more reckless, as he's willing to overlook mission protocols to tap Unity systems for information on Ducard's security grid and how to infiltrate it.
